Nearly 5 Million Bottles of Fabuloso Cleaners Recalled Due to Possible Contamination With Dangerous Bacteria

The multipurpose cleaners may be contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria

About 4.9 million bottles of Fabuloso multipurpose cleaners are being recalled due to possible bacterial contamination. Consumers should immediately stop using the affected cleaners and contact Colgate-Palmolive, which makes the popular product, for a full refund or replacement.

The company says a preservative wasn’t added at the intended levels during the manufacturing of the recalled cleaners, and without enough of it, there is a risk of bacterial growth. Affected products may contain two types of Pseudomonas bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas fluorescens. These bacteria can be especially dangerous because they can be highly resistant to most antibiotics.

The bacteria can enter the body if inhaled, through the eyes, or through a break in the skin.

People with a weakened immune system, external medical devices, or underlying lung conditions who are exposed to the bacteria face a risk of serious infection that may require medical treatment. People with healthy immune systems are usually not affected by the bacteria, the company says

Fabuloso had been a cleaning staple in many Latino households before making it to mass retailers’ shelves. (Share the details of this recall in Spanish.)

In the past, Fabuloso cleaning products have been mistaken for beverages. On the Fabuloso website, the company warns against drinking the products, saying, “None of our home cleaning or disinfecting products should be introduced into the human body under any circumstances.”

This Fabuloso recall follows a recall earlier this month of certain Delsam and EzriCare eye drops, which were also made without enough preservatives and may be contaminated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Last year, certain Pine-Sol cleaning products were recalled due to possible Pseudomonas aeruginosa contamination as well.

    The Details
