Consumer Reports puts together their list of Top Picks every year, highlighting the 10 best cars across a variety of segments. How do we pick those cars? What do we think about them? Why did some cars miss the list? And what cars almost made the grade? We answer all of those questions and more on this Top Picks episode of "Talking Cars with Consumer Reports."
To make the exclusive list, Top Picks need to score at or near the top of their class, have average or better reliability, and perform adequately in crash testing.
Two trends emerged this year: Subaru pulls off a hat trick with three Top Pick wins, and American brands have something of a resurgence with three domestic-branded choices on the list—the most in over a decade.
Some choices—and the absence of others—naturally raise questions. How did the Buick Regal unseat the BMW 3 Series for best sports sedan? Why is there no choice for pickup truck, especially given the new Ford F-150? And how does the Toyota Prius keep winning our nod for best green car?
