Connecting and controlling all your home devices—including major appliance and heating and cooling systems—can be a daunting and expensive task. But Belkin hopes to simplify home automation with its WeMo devices introduced at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show.
The $50 Belkin WeMo devices are power outlet adapters that also tap into a home's WiFi network. Consumers can then power on or off simple home fixtures—lamps, TVs, and so on—from any Internet-connected smart phone using a free WeMo app. The smart phone app can be used to program devices as well—say, to automatically turn on a lamp before someone's scheduled arrival home.
A motion-sensor equipped adapter will cost $10 more and can be programmed for additional controls, for example, turning off the TV once WeMo has detected there's no one in the room.
Belkin also announced it's working with Kwikset to produce WeMo-compliant devices that will control door locks.
WeMo power adapters should be available by this summer, but neither Belkin nor Kwikset announced when they'll have WeMo door locks ready.
