VIDEO. The GoPro HERO5 Black takes good video. Video was sharp, though not as sharp as top-rated models, which means you can see much but not all details and subtle patterns in the footage. In low-light situations, the video was only fair: fairly dim, soft and grainy. It captures Ultra HD video at 3840x2160 at 30 frames per second (fps), progressive-scan (p).
AUDIO. It captures fair audio in stereo.
PHOTO QUALITY. In photo mode, it captures 12-megapixel stills with very good quality.
LENS. The lens has a fixed-focal length; it has no optical zoom capability.
IMAGE STABILIZER. It has an image stabilizer, so shooting in well-lit scenes, this model did an excellent job of minimizing the effects of camcorder shake.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS. This model survived our repeated drop test. It also survived being dunked in 33 feet of water for 30 minutes without requiring a waterproof enclosure and it was a little heavier than some action camcorders.
