Because professional-style ranges are built to withstand a lot of use, at least in theory, you’d think they’d be more reliable than your average kitchen range. But based on data from Consumer Reports’ reliability surveys, the opposite is true.
In fact, according to our member surveys, some of the most expensive pro-style range brands have some of the highest estimated problem rates by the fifth year of ownership. Of the 14 pro-style brands we rate from our surveys, only three earn above-average marks for predicted reliability, with only a single brand earning the top score. Four brands earn below-average marks, with a lone brand earning the lowest score possible.
To see how well ranges hold up in a consumer’s home, we survey our members every year about the products they own and use the data to make projections about how new models from a given brand will hold up over time. That determines our predicted reliability ratings. We also ask members how likely they are to recommend their range to others, and that serves as the basis for our owner satisfaction rating.
Most Reliable Pro-Style Range Brands
From our surveys, we have reliability ratings for 14 major manufacturers of pro-style ranges: Bertazzoni, BlueStar, Bosch, Dacor, Hisense, JennAir, KitchenAid, Miele, Monogram, Samsung, Thermador, Viking, and Wolf. We also collected data on Café, formerly GE Café, because so many of our respondents described it as a pro-style range. But it’s actually more of a consumer brand, so we’ve omitted it from our discussion here. You can read more about Café in our article on gas range reliability.
