We test and evaluate more than our fair share of products here at CR. And more often than not, a few pop up on our radar because of their popularity with our readers.

Unlike fad purchases, these particular items have merit. They’ve either been rigorously tested and approved in our labs or thoroughly vetted in our editors’ homes, where they’ve gone through the rough and tumble of real life.

Amazon Basics Quart Slider Storage Bags

Amazon Basics Quart Slider Storage Bags

These quart bags from a proprietary Amazon brand are the strongest against punctures in our tests, as well as being the easiest to use: We were able to easily remove the bags from the box, fill them, and open and close them. They landed at No. 3 for our leak test and are one of the least expensive bags we tested, making them a phenomenal budget buy. Our 6-year-old evaluator, Eliana, the daughter of a Consumer Reports employee, called opening and closing these slider zipper bags “easy-peasy.”

W&P Porter Silicone Reusable Storage Bag

W&P Porter Silicone Reusable Storage Bag

Of all the silicone bags our evaluator tried out, these came closest to looking and feeling like a disposable zip-top bag. The food-grade silicone is thin, soft, pliable, and crystal clear on the front. W&P offers flat bags (10, 34, and 46 fluid ounces) and stand-up bags (36 and 50 fluid ounces) in five colors. While the W&P bags mimic the convenience of zip-top bags, they outperform them when it comes to cleaning. The curved corners make them easy to wash, and unlike most other flat silicone bags, you can turn these inside out.

Gorrilla Grip Durable Kitchen Cutting Board, Set of 3

Gorrilla Grip Durable Kitchen Cutting Board, Set of 3

The best kitchen tools are those you find yourself grabbing time and time again. Cue this set of cutting boards from Gorilla Grip. Our evaluator found that they do everything a cutting board should, without fuss. They were among the most stable on wood counters and rarely slipped while in use. They felt great beneath our evaluator’s knife, too, providing a bit of grip and good feedback. These Gorilla Grip boards are reversible, and the second side doesn’t have a groove. Best of all, they’re dishwasher-safe, which makes them very easy to clean and sanitize.

Chef’s Choice Model 15XV 3-Stage Professional Electric Knife Sharpener

Chef’s Choice Model 15XV 3-Stage Professional Electric Knife Sharpener

The Chef’s Choice Model 15XV is second to none when it comes to easy, complete sharpening. It removes most of the guesswork and helps you maintain a perfect angle, and it can sharpen pretty much any knife you’ll ever own, even serrated bread knives or sushi and sashimi knives, which are sharpened on only one side.

The tool is designed to sharpen every straight-edged knife to a precise 15-degree angle, which is a sweet spot for most new knives. It features three settings: sharpening, honing, and polishing. There’s no setup, cleanup, or stress.

    Skylight Calendar Max

    Skylight Calendar Max

The Skylight Calendar is the wall display that our evaluators want hanging in their homes. It has a robust set of features, but its core calendar feature is straightforward for people of many ages to use. You can invite multiple calendars to sync to Skylight, such as work and personal calendars, and each gets its own customizable color, so users can assign their favorite hues. The Skylight can be mounted either horizontally or vertically. Events show up immediately on your Skylight, whether you’ve added them directly to your Skylight display or to the Skylight app or your calendar app. The device’s Magic Import feature is a nifty tool that can grab events from your email, a PDF, or a screenshot, and import them directly to your Skylight so you don’t need to do so manually. It has a parental lock feature, too, that prevents your kiddo from adding, deleting, or modifying events or chores.

    Dorai Bath Stone Mat-Aspen

    Dorai Bath Stone Mat-Aspen

Stone bath mats made from diatomaceous earth are compressed slabs of this powdery material with millions of pores that soak up water and keep the surface dry. The Dorai Aspen Stone bath mat was a standout in a recent evaluation. It absorbs water upon contact and dries within seconds. During the break test, it ranked the best, showing only small indentations and no cracks from the impact of a 3-pound solid object.

    Hatch Belly Oil

    Hatch Belly Oil

While there’s no guaranteed way to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy, a product that offers moisturization and hydration can sometimes help. We partnered with Made Safe, a nonprofit that certifies products for safety and sustainability, to evaluate stretch mark creams and oils to help identify top choices, and this belly oil from Hatch was one of our top choices.

    Amazon Basics Flushable Wipes

    Amazon Basics Flushable Wipes

Amazon Basics Flushable Wipes achieved an above-average Overall Score in our tests and were the second strongest wipe. They cleaned really well, removing sticky honey from skin with just two passes from one wipe. They also dried easily (without leaving a lingering wet residue behind like some wipes). They come in plastic packaging with a resealable sticker, which can help the wipes retain their moisture better than a wipes package with a clickable lid (which may allow more air in to dry out wipes faster).

    Outdoor Essentials

The Brightech Pro Solar Powered Outdoor String Lights are the best in class in our tests, with above-average marks for light duration and a top score for ease of use. Widely spaced on a long cord, these lights provide flexibility. You can run the strand as is for more subtle lighting or double up the cord to concentrate more of the light in a tighter space. Each of its 12 separate Edison-style oval-shaped bulbs has 24 LEDs, resulting in exceptionally bright light. The lights can’t be manually charged, but they do have replaceable batteries and an on/off button to preserve power.

The Grand Patio umbrella is one of the more expensive patio umbrellas we tested and one of the larger options in our ratings. It got above-average scores in CR’s tests for ease of use and assembly, but it’s a little less rigid than higher-scoring models.

    Coavas Window Privacy Film

    Coavas Window Privacy Film

This was the darkest tinted window privacy film we evaluated. It didn’t completely block visibility through the test window, but it significantly affected it. Its opacity would make it ideal for adding an extra layer of privacy to a ground-level window. In our lab testing, the film wasn’t affected by cold or hot temperatures. When we scratched over the larger bubbles trapped under it, our fingers didn’t rip through the material, and scratching didn’t leave any marks on the film. There were no signs of the film left on the glass after removing it. Coavas claims that its film blocks 90 percent of UV rays and 85 percent of infrared rays, and has a visible light transmission of 12 percent, the lowest light transmission of all the products our evaluator tried.

    Must-Have Cleaning Products

If you’re looking for a versatile cleaner, the Mop & Glo Professional Multi-Surface Floor Cleaner has proven itself capable of cleaning all kinds of messes on hardwood floors. It does a stand-up job erasing scuff marks and is pretty good at tackling dried food messes such as mustard and tomato soup. Another plus: We also tested this cleaner on laminate and tile floors and found it to be a strong cleaner for those surfaces as well.

You can apply the solution directly onto your floors without having to dilute it first. The cleaner has a citrus scent and, according to the manufacturer, can be used on hardwood, laminate, marble, and tile floors.

    Sprayway Glass Cleaner

    Sprayway Glass Cleaner

While all the glass cleaners we tested performed well on mirrors and windows, we selected Sprayway’s foaming glass cleaner as our favorite because of its additional functionality as a chrome, tile, and porcelain cleaner. The ammonia-free formula easily cut through all our messes, leaving surfaces instantly dry after a single wipe with a microfiber cloth. Of the eight products we tested, it was the quickest to dry on mirrors and windows. This foaming formula also clung to the surfaces it was sprayed on, so there was no need to rush to wipe.

The Shark Navigator Professional NV360 is one of the least expensive upright vacuums we’ve tested, and it’s also one of the highest-performing. Its standout feature is that it’s the only bagless upright model to earn a top score in our carpet cleaning tests. It’s equally amazing at picking up stray pet hair and clearing bare floors of debris. The vacuum weighs about 14 pounds and has a detachable pod for more flexible cleaning.
