What does it cost to buy a gaming laptop?

Today you can easily spend upward of $2,000 on a high-end model with eye-watering specs, but if you’re willing to shop around you can find a perfectly capable option for around $1,000.

That’s roughly double the price of a brand new Sony PlayStation 5 or Microsoft Xbox Series X. But if you’re looking to get some work done in addition to playing the latest games like “Star Wars Jedi Survivor” and “Resident Evil 4,” a gaming laptop may be the smarter buy.

The best budget gaming laptops are equipped with high-end Intel and AMD processors, large amounts of memory and storage, and dedicated graphics cards, all of which work together to provide a smooth gaming spectacle.

    More on Laptops

A high-end, more expensive gaming laptop may provide a more refined experience, delivering higher-resolution graphics or more advanced lighting techniques. But games like “Counter-Strike” and “Age of Wonders 4” are just as fun to play on a budget gaming laptop as they are on more advanced models.

Consumer Reports is a nonprofit membership organization. As with all of the products tested in our labs, we buy laptops, including gaming laptops, at retail stores to ensure that manufacturers don’t try to skew our results with cherry-picked models. Our testers evaluate performance data, battery life, and display quality, among other criteria, to help you pick the right model for your needs.

Below you’ll find our picks for the best budget gaming laptops, including the first gaming Chromebook in our ratings, starting with the least expensive option.
