Most mattresses tend to be advertised as “on sale” all year long, but the discounts are best during holiday weekends. And the Labor Day mattress sales are here on all the top brands, from Avocado and Casper to Brooklyn Bedding, Sleepy’s, Serta, and more. If you’re not quite ready to buy, these sales often extend a few days to a week past the holiday weekend, so you’ve got a little bit of time to make a decision (and you’ll likely see these prices again around Black Friday).
During holidays like this, discounts typically increase by 5 to 10 percent compared to their everyday offers. Those sales are almost always available, too, so if you want to maximize your savings, Labor Day (or any holiday weekend) is the best opportunity. Below you’ll see prices for queen mattresses, but all sizes are on sale.

If you’re looking for a soft mattress, the Casper Dream is a solid pick, providing pressure relief and comfort. In our lab evaluation, we found the model—a newbie to CR’s ratings—to be a standout for petite back sleepers, and it serves all other sizes and positions very well. The Dream scores well for durability, too, so you can expect to get sound sleep on it for 8 to 10 years. If you sleep with a partner, you should feel very little vibration from their movement. CR members give Casper mattresses high marks for comfort and owner satisfaction.
The Avocado Green is often 10 percent off outside of major holidays, but we do typically see this discount improve to 15 percent closer to holiday weekends. And the Labor Day mattress sale has already begun, bringing the price of a queen Green mattress down to $1,784 from $2,099—it’s typically listed at $1,899, so you’re really saving a little more than $100. (And if you’re a CR Digital or All Access member, log on and read below about an exclusive offer to save a little extra.) The mattress performs superbly in our support tests for all sizes and sleep positions, except for petite side sleepers, where it still rates better than most. It receives only a middling score for stabilization, however, so if you don’t like much bounce or motion transfer, this mattress might not be the one for you.
CR members can save an extra $50 on any purchase of $500 or more. To get the discount, click on the Get Offer button above. Once you meet the minimum threshold, the discount will apply to your cart.
The 13-inch Allswell Luxe Hybrid is one of the least expensive innerspring mattresses we’ve tested, yet it still manages to earn an excellent support score for back sleepers who are average-sized or smaller. Large back sleepers and average-sized or smaller side sleepers should also experience solid support, according to our tests; only large side sleepers should look elsewhere. This model isolates motion well, too, though it’s a little less durable than most mattresses in our tests. Allswell earns only a middling score for comfort, according to our member surveys, though it has a very good owner satisfaction rating.
The Layla Essential foam mattress, which is 9 inches thick, is a great lower-cost option if you’re in the market for a firm mattress. It earns CR’s top ratings for petite and average back sleepers and near-perfect scores for large back sleepers and petite side sleepers. Average and large side sleepers would find better support elsewhere, though. The mattress receives a firmness rating of 7 out of 10 in our tests. You may feel some vibrations from a fellow sleeper’s shifts; the model earns only a middling stability score. It also doesn’t retain heat. In our member surveys, Layla mattresses earn solid scores for comfort and owner satisfaction.
There are quite a few high-performing foam mattresses in our ratings that offer terrific side-sleeper support. This 10-inch-thick mattress-in-a-box is particularly appealing if you’re looking for the springy cushioning of latex but don’t want to spend more than $2,000 for it. (Many high scorers in our ratings cost much more than that, and this latex is GOLS-certified organic.) It earns a not-too-firm, not-too-soft score of 5 on our firmness scale. According to our tests, side sleepers—and those smaller-than-average in particular—receive terrific support. Back sleepers do just as well.
Brooklyn Bedding has mattresses, pillows, mattress toppers, sheets, and more. CR has tested a handful of the company’s products, including the Signature Hybrid mattress, which is 25 percent off with the code LABORDAY25. On July Fourth, we saw the discount reach 30 percent when the holiday weekend hit, so we’d recommend waiting until the weekend, as this is likely to happen again, and you’ll potentially be able to save an additional $60.
This model is an exceptional choice for petite side sleepers; it got top marks in that category. And folks with other body types and sleep styles may be happy with it as well because it scored above average in all our other tests.
The Casper Snow is one of the least heat-retaining mattresses we’ve tested, making it great for those who sleep hot. It’s also an all-around high-performing pick. Combining pocketed coils with layers of foam, this hybrid is particularly supportive for petite back sleepers but is also well suited for side sleepers of all sizes and for the average back sleeper. Large and tall sleepers may want to look elsewhere. With a firmness rating of 4 out of 10, it’s on the softer side. Its solid stability rating means sleepers are unlikely to feel vibrations from a partner’s movements.
Back sleepers of all sizes will appreciate that the Essentia Grateful Eight Organic mattress offers excellent support. Side sleepers will also find that it offers solid support. This newly released latex foam model from Essentia has excellent stability. But it weighs a hefty 111 pounds and has no grips, so you’ll need someone to help you move it. In our member surveys, Essentia’s foam models receive the highest possible rating for comfort and are just a tad shy of a top-tier mark for owner satisfaction. With a firmness level of 6 out of 10, the model is medium to medium-firm in feel. It’s among the eco-friendliest foam offerings in our ratings.
The Serta iSeries 2000 innerspring mattress is a higher-end bed that isn’t on sale for most shoppers right now, but CR members can qualify for additional savings (read below for more information). This mattress is a CR Recommended model because it excelled in our lab tests across the board. It scored above average for our tests for every type of sleeper, and especially for petite back sleepers, so no matter your body type or sleeping style, this could be the right fit. It gets a 4 out of 10 on the firmness scale, so it falls on the softer side.
Petite sleepers looking for a very soft mattress should find quality rest with the Casper Dream Max. It’s one of several models recently revamped by the popular mattress-in-a-box company. While those on the smaller side will find exceptional support, the Dream Max still offers solid support for side and back sleepers of all sizes. Testers also found it to be durable and adequate at isolating motion. With a firmness rating of 2 out of 10, expect a very plush feel. Casper innerspring mattresses earn very good comfort and owner satisfaction ratings in our member surveys.
This memory foam mattress from Sleepy’s is a CR Recommended model. This mattress gets high marks for average and petite back sleepers, and above-average scores for all other sleeping types and body sizes. So if you prefer all memory foam and need a new bed, this could be a good option. Just note that it gets middling scores for stabilization and owner satisfaction.
Casper The One mattress wowed testers, earning top marks for its support of average and petite back sleepers. It also provided strong support for large and tall back sleepers and side sleepers of all sizes. This highly durable mattress receives a 6 on our 10-point firmness scale, so you can expect a medium-soft feel. You can also anticipate a pretty sound sleep regardless of your partner’s movements because it receives a very good score for stabilization. Casper foam mattresses tend to please their owners in terms of both comfort and owner satisfaction in our member surveys.
Durable and adjustable, the newly revamped Sleep Number p6 Smart Bed offers excellent support for petite and average back sleepers and very good support for all other sleepers. Very little vibration is felt throughout the mattress when there’s movement. CR members give Sleep Number beds a stellar comfort rating and a respectable owner satisfaction score.
The Essentia Stratami is one of the top performers in CR’s tests, especially if you sleep on your back. Mattress shoppers who come to Essentia for organic materials won’t be disappointed in the performance of the company’s natural rubber latex-based foam. This mattress performed excellently for petite and average-sized back sleepers. Large/tall back sleepers and all side sleepers will find very good performance as well.
The Birch Natural mattress is 25 percent off for Labor Day with the code LDW25 (and it comes with two free pillows). It does well in CR’s tests, and if you’re a petite side sleeper, it may be an exceptional choice. It gets top scores in our tests for that category. It scores above average for all other sleepers, except large and tall side sleepers, who may want to look at other models.
The Sleep Number C2, currently 10 percent off, earns a stellar rating for petite and average back-sleeper support and scores very well in our support tests for all other sleepers. Those sleeping with a partner will appreciate that this bed is quite stable, so movement throughout the night remains mostly isolated. CR members who own a Sleep Number mattress are very happy with their purchase, and the brand earns a top-tier comfort rating.
The 8-inch-thick Essentia Classic REM5 Organic offers very good support for side sleepers of all sizes and most of their back-sleeping partners, though smaller back sleepers may want to consider another mattress. While CR members find Essentia foam mattresses to be quite comfortable, for this model in particular, that comfort comes at a pretty steep cost. The REM5 is usually more than $4,000, but it’s also made of organic latex foam, a material that tends to fetch a higher price due to its luxury status. Our tests show that this mattress doesn’t retain heat. With a firmness rating of 3 out of 10, the bed has a soft feel.
