Anyday says its io Collection allows users to cook in the microwave, serve food from the bowls, store the leftovers in the fridge, and reheat leftovers. We tried it to find out if it can really do all that.

When I moved into my new apartment two years ago, the first thing I checked was whether or not there was a microwave. It’s important to know thyself, and when it comes to cooking, I know I can survive without a lot of things—a slow cooker, an air fryer, an oven, even—but the microwave is the one thing I can’t live without.

Despite my predilection for the microwave though, I currently don’t have a microwave-safe cover for my food. That means that whenever I microwave something, I’ve had to resort to desperate creative measures. These days that usually involves me balancing a plate on my dish and listening to it rattle the whole time through, threatening to fall off.

    MORE ON COOKING

A set of cookware designed specifically for the microwave would solve a lot of my current issues, and the one that caught my eye was the $180 io collection, a collaboration between the brand Anyday and acclaimed chef David Chang.

It’s a set of cookware that claims to be 100 percent plastic-free and safe to use in a microwave. Its design is supposed to ensure that your food stays tender and moist while being evenly cooked. Every dish has a glass lid that comes with a vented knob. “Our lid is what sets us apart,” says Steph Chen, the CEO and founder of Anyday. “The vented silicone knob allows the right amount of steam to escape while cooking, while also trapping in moisture to ensure that food is evenly cooked.”

So is the io cookware as good as it seems? Can you really use the cookware to cook food, and does it heat up food more evenly? I used the io cookware myself for several weeks, and here’s my take.

How Good Is the io Collection at Cooking Food?

To find out how easy it was to cook with the io cookware, I made a couple of different dishes: white rice, scrambled eggs, bacon, chicken seasoned with salt and pepper, and steamed ginger-scallion fish.
