When it comes to caring for the dogs in our lives, we want only the best for them. And the work we do here at CR, testing and evaluating a host of pet-focused products, is no exception.
Over the past few years, we’ve dug deep into the ins and outs of pet ownership. We uncovered standout portable carpet cleaners for those "accidents" that somehow keep repeating; we tested 58 dog foods for contaminants and claimed nutrients; and we got our hands dirty (literally) in search of the best poop bags. You’re welcome for that one.
Ahead, we rounded up the best dog accessories and other essentials across a wide variety of categories that impress in our tests and evaluations.
Best Dog Accessories
Chuckit Classic 26M Dog Ball Launcher
The Chuckit Classic is ideal for dog owners who are searching for a low-tech ball launcher. It requires no setup and still allows you to get involved in a game of fetch, but takes your natural throwing arm to the next level. The plastic handheld launcher comes with one fuzzy 2.5-inch tennis ball that is stored in its “claw,” which keeps a solid grip on it so that it doesn’t fall out. When you’re ready to play with your pup, you treat the launcher like it’s an extension of your own arm—pulling it back and then launching it forward to release the ball from the claw.
One of the nicest things about this launcher is that you can retrieve balls (including saliva-coated slobbery ones) with the claw itself so that you never have to touch the ball with your hands.
PawZ Rubber Dog Boots
Hands down, the PawZ Rubber Dog Boots proved the best option for repelling water and mud. After being submerged in water, they dried completely in less than 1 hour, and mud and dirt washed off them with little more than cold or warm water. Better yet, during our evaluations, we found that most of our dogs didn’t want to take the boots off.
For the best fit, the brand recommends measuring your dog’s paws from the bottom of the rear heel pad to the tip of the longest toe nail. If their paws are in between sizes, it’s best to size up (the boots tend to run small).
FurHaven Deluxe Chaise LoungeDog Bed
The FurHaven Deluxe Chaise Lounge Dog Bed is the luxurious chaise lounge of dog beds—it even boasts a soft L-shaped bolster where your pooch can comfortably rest their head. Everything about this bed seems designed with doggy comfort in mind, from its egg crate orthopedic foam base that can help cushion pressure points, according to the manufacturer, to its faux fur sleep surface. The dog bed cover is removable and machine-washable. It comes in sizes that can accommodate dogs up to 125 pounds, and in our evaluations, it was the clear favorite for all the dogs.
Costway Petsite 3 in 1 Pet Stroller
The PetSite 3-in-1 dog stroller is multifunctional, easy to assemble and fold, lightweight, sturdy, comfy, and less expensive. The removable car seat carrier is a game-changer, making it really versatile for travel. It serves as both a car seat and portable carrier, complete with a carrying strap.
It has a max capacity of 33 pounds, and our evaluator found that the seating space felt very secure, held in place by a substantial fabric fastener on one end and a pocket on the other. According to the company, an adjustable canopy and mesh window add breathability and protection from harmful UV rays. With nice extras like storage underneath and pockets to hold additional items like doggy bags and treats, this pet stroller earns the designation of Editor’s Choice.
Best Dog Grooming and Cleanup Staples
Pets & Pupps Toothbrush
The Pets & Pupps Toothbrush looks well designed, with a wider, grippier handle and soft but sturdy bristles. It features a dual-headed handle with a larger brush head on one side and a small brush head (for small dogs and teeth) on the other. In our evaluations, we found that this toothbrush is comfortable to hold. Its brush heads worked for all three of our dogs, and none of them resisted it. The cherry on top: It’s an attractive brush. Some outside reviews noted that the bristles on this brush came loose easily, but that wasn’t our experience.
Jasper 360° Pet Finger Toothbrush
If you prefer the convenience of a finger toothbrush, look no further. The Jasper 360° is a toothbrush that you wear, well, on your finger. You apply a small amount of toothpaste to it and maneuver it around your dog’s mouth. This pick is made from silicone, features 360-degree bristles, and comes in a pack of two with little storage cases, a nice feature. According to the manufacturer, the set provides a six-month supply, so each finger toothbrush is designed to last three months.
If you’re interested in trying a finger toothbrush, this is the one. It’s well constructed and fits well, and our dogs (mostly) liked or tolerated it.
Gonicc Pet Nail Trimmer
The Gonicc Pet Nail Trimmer is basic and inexpensive, but it gets the job done. Our evaluator used these clippers on their skittish border collie for years and found them to stand the test of time. They haven’t rusted, and they boast sharp blades and nonslip handles. The clippers have a guard along the back to prevent you from clipping more than you intend to, which could cause your dogs’ paws to bleed. Because they’re manual, they’re quiet. (This is ideal for skittish dogs.) And they almost always cut the entire nail within one go, making for an efficient process.
Dremel PawControl Dog Nail Grinder and Trimmer
The Dremel PawControl is a nail grinder that feels a bit like using a sander on your pet’s nails. It is easy to use, but it’s fairly loud and requires several rounds of grinding to get the same results as the manual clippers. One upside is that the Dremel has a clear plastic window that lets you see exactly how deep you’re getting as you grind the nail down. This doesn’t save time, compared with the clippers, but it does help you stay away from the quick—the sensitive, inner part of the nail that contains blood vessels and nerves. Some grinders can make a mess, but the Dremel comes with a plastic coupling that catches dust and is easy to detach and dump right into the trash. Out of all of the clippers and grinders we evaluated, this one comes closest to providing a professional grooming experience because it comes with accessories such as grit sanding disks and a pet nail grooming attachment.
ChomChom Roller Pet Hair Remover
If you can have only one pet hair removal tool in your cleaning toolbox, this is the one. The ChomChom was a favorite with our at-home evaluators and the best-performing option in our formal lab tests. What sets it apart is that it’s the only tool that gathers and picks up all the pet hair it touches. After just three forward and backward swipes, our velvet and linen-polyester pillows were left almost completely free of hair, minus a few stragglers. It was the best tool on carpet, too, even though crouching low to use it wasn’t the most comfortable position. No other tool left it as hair-free as the ChomChom. One evaluator who has carpal tunnel syndrome noted that this tool required significantly less pressure to work, which meant that her condition wasn’t aggravated as it was with a few of the other pet hair removers. It’s also worth noting that three of our at-home evaluators liked this tool so much that they bought it for themselves post-evaluation.
Arm & Hammer Pooper Scooper Swivel Bin & Rake Dog Poop Scooper
The Arm & Hammer Pooper Scooper offers a practical and hygienic solution for waste removal at home, featuring a swivel bin that facilitates easy collection from various surfaces. It includes an adjustable rake and handle, allowing height customization to suit individual needs.
Earth Rated Dog Poop Bags
Dog poop bags should be nothing if not durable. This option from Earth Rated earned the distinction of "Most Durable" in a recent evaluation where we found that they felt considerably thicker than the other models. We also found that the bags held up exceptionally well while picking up pet messes on concrete, grass, and gravel. They even withstood pulling and stretching, showing greater resilience compared with all the bags in the test.
Bonus: Environmentally conscious pet parents don’t have to compromise on quality for sustainability with Earth Rated poop bags. These bags are made from 65 percent certified post-consumer recycled plastic, saving 5 million pounds of landfill-bound plastic each year, according to the brand.
Best Dog Feeders and Water Fountains
PetLibro Smart Water Fountain
The Petlibro Dockstream Smart Pet Fountain is a WiFi-enabled device that lets you accurately monitor your pet’s water intake. It holds more than half a gallon of water, and the whole fountain is wireless. It even has a motion sensor, so it only runs when your pet approaches it, making the battery last even longer. The app can also alert you when water levels are low, which is especially nice because the container is opaque.
Rellaty Stainless Steel Pet Water Fountain
The Rellaty Pet Water Fountain is another standout model from our evaluations. It’s made of 304 stainless steel, which is corrosion-resistant and can withstand high-temperature cleaning—making it dishwasher-safe. It has seven removable parts, and assembly is pretty straightforward. What really sets this fountain apart is its T-water faucet design. If you have a pet that loves drinking water directly from a faucet, they’re going to love this feature. The faucet is also removable, so you can switch to a gentler bubbling mode if you prefer.
Petlibro Granary Smart Feeder
The Petlibro automatic pet feeder is easy to use and has an app that makes setting schedules and dispensing food a breeze. It dispenses accurate amounts of dry food for dogs or cats and has a voice recording feature that allows you to call your pet for meals.
Best Dog Cameras and GPS Trackers
The Tractive GPS Dog LTE (TRNJAWH) is the top-scoring model in our testing even before considering price. When you factor in that it costs significantly less than the two runners-up, it’s the clear favorite. The Tractive was especially easy to set up and use. Light and compact yet sturdy, the slender unit easily attaches to any dog collar and would fit comfortably on most small dogs and even cats. The app is among the best of the bunch, with a clean and intuitive interface.
It’s downside is that both the light and the sound emitted by the Tractive tracker are too weak to see or hear from more than a short distance. It’s also worth noting that the Tractive’s claimed battery life is seven days. That’s a fairly long time, and recharging is easy, but other models claim to work up to three times as long without recharging.
In case you haven’t heard, home security cameras make for great pet cameras. The Arlo Essential Indoor 2K security camera offers great video quality, strong data security, speedy alerts to the app when motion is detected, and many smart features. Those features include two-way audio, voice/app control via Amazon Alexa and Google Home/Assistant, an automated privacy shutter to disable recording while you’re home, and a built-in siren. With one of the three Arlo Secure plans, you’ll also get activity zones and intelligent object recognition for people, packages, vehicles, and pets.
The unusual Eufy Indoor Cam S350 is a dual-camera model, meaning it has a 4K wide-angle camera and a 2K telephoto camera. The two cameras work together to give you detailed zoom abilities with what Eufy claims is “8x hybrid zoom.” In our tests, this Eufy camera offers speedy response times and receives strong scores for video quality, data security, and smart features. Its only weak spot is its lackluster data privacy; that’s par for the course with security cameras.
The Eufy Indoor Cam S350 must be plugged in for power and can store recordings locally on up to a 128-gigabyte microSD card (sold separately). In addition to its dual cameras, this Eufy features motorized pan-and-tilt, person and pet detection, crying detection (if you choose to use it as a baby monitor), voice and app control for Amazon Alexa and Google Home/Assistant, a privacy mode to point the camera away at a wall or ceiling, and support for WiFi 6 wireless routers.
Best Vacuums for Pet Hair
While upright vacuums excel at cleaning carpet, the Kenmore BU1018 actually does a bit better on bare floors, which makes it a good option for handling hardwood floors, among other types of flooring. And if you have a pet, it’s a great pick. This wallet-friendly vacuum also has nice extras, like a HEPA filter and a full-bag indicator.
The bagged Miele Complete C3 Marin is pricey, but its excellent ratings for pet hair and bare floors and very good rating for cleaning carpets make it a solid choice. Suction through the hose is top notch, and it’s quieter than many vacuums. It gets good marks in our clean emissions test, and a full-bag indicator warns you when you need a fresh bag. And like most canisters, it has a retractable cord.
