Gas grills take a beating like few other household appliances. You’d never expect your fridge to hum along smoothly after shifting it around your deck, moving it in and out of your garage, or leaving it out in the rain. Nonetheless, we subject our gas grills to do exactly that—and expect them to light up effortlessly and sear our burgers and brats without a hitch. It’s no wonder so many brands are disappointing—expectations are especially high. Fortunately, we know that a fair number are, in fact, up to that challenge based on data from our member surveys.

While our test engineers assess dozens of models for performance each year, our survey department asks thousands of members about more than 53,000 full-size gas grills purchased between 2012 and 2022, looking for the brands that hold up well over time. If you’re in the market for a reliable one, start with our grill buying guide. CR members can also jump to our gas grill ratings, which include more than 175 models.

    More on Grills

In our latest surveys, published in early 2023, we asked members about problems they had with their grills, and used a statistical model to turn those answers into ratings for predicted reliability by the fifth year of ownership. We also asked members how likely they were to recommend their grill to a friend or family member. Those responses were used for our owner satisfaction ratings.

“When you browse our gas grill ratings, you’ll see that predicted reliability and owner satisfaction are scored, along with the performance testing that occurs in our labs,” says Martin Lachter, a research program leader at CR. “Taken together, they paint a really robust picture of product quality.”

    Most Reliable Gas Grill Brands

From our surveys, we have reliability ratings for a whopping 31 gas grill manufacturers, including big-name brands like Weber, Napoleon, Blaze, KitchenAid, and Cuisinart. CR members can read on for the full list of the most reliable gas grill brands as well as the specific models we recommend.
