Sound quality: Ultimate Ears's Wonderboom 4 had acceptable overall sound quality - this model reproduces music and dialog reasonably well despite the obvious shortcomings in its sound. In the normal sound mode the bass has decent impact, is a bit subdued and boomy and doesn't go deep. Midrange is a bit thin and plasticky, somewhat grainy, hazy, and a touch echoey. Treble is extended, but somewhat prominent and sizzly and a bit smeared. Although the overall sound is somewhat congested it does a so-so job of recovering room ambience but the echoey quality of the midrange adds a spacious sound that may not exist in the original program material. When two units are combined to form a stereo pair, the sound stage can be made wider depending on placement. It provides a decent volume level in medium sized room. The Outdoor Blast and Podcast sound mode has a noticeable effect on the sound.
