When my sister first asked for help finding a local store that sold disposable cameras this summer, I was confused. Why in the world would a 16-year-old want a disposable camera? Turns out, it’s cool to take pictures that look just a little out of focus.

Like many other things that go out of style, disposable cameras are back—in a big way. Quick Instagram and TikTok searches produce a long list of content around the old gadgets. There are videos of teens taking them along for school trips, and plenty of inspiration for creating artsy Instagram posts with the prints, too.

    More on Cameras & Photography

For adults, these cameras add a nostalgic touch to special events, like handing them out to guests at a wedding or a themed birthday party. I didn’t get it until I started working on this project, evaluating three of the most popular models (and a more sustainable reusable option).

Then the familiar ritual of the winding of the film, the sound of the shutter as it captures a photo, and the excitement as I waited to get a call from the One Hour Photo I used to develop my film reminded me why disposable cameras are so much fun.

Our smartphones give us quality photos that we get to view immediately, but where’s the fun in that? Plus, during the holidays, disposable cameras are a great stocking stuffer for teens and can be used as a way to capture family events throughout the season, too.
