Sound quality: Jabra's Solemate Max had good sound quality overall. Bass has good impact and decent definition, but doesn't go deep. Midrange is a bit thin, gritty, hazy and congested, and treble is extended but a bit sizzly. This model does a decent job recovering room ambience, or the sense of an acoustic space, such as the hall or room in which a recording was made. We found no significant difference in sound quality whether we used a wired or Bluetooth connection when the native app wasn't used. (The app lets you customize the Bluetooth sound but not the sound when you use a wired connection.) When we used the Dolby Digital Plus feature, the sound became metallic, diffuse and glaring, dropping the overall sound quality into the fair range. This model can provide a decent volume level in a medium-sized room.
Ease of use: The system's ease of use was very good overall. Bluetooth pairing was easy and the Solemate Max controls were well marked and intuitive. The speaker will emit tone alerts for various functions, such as Bluetooth pairing. The sound level of the alerts is pretty low, but they can't be turned off or adjusted, so they may be annoying to some users. The smartphone app remote was very easy to use; it has a decent array of controls and navigation was often intuitive.
