Anyone with a daily coffee habit needs a great coffee maker. That means a machine that can reliably produce a high-quality brew day after day—not just when it’s new but also after you’ve used it for weeks, months, and even years.

Consumer Reports conducts exhaustive lab tests on a wide range of coffee makers—evaluating brew performance, carafe handling, brew time, and convenience—to help you choose the best coffee maker for your kitchen.

Even more integral to a coffee maker’s reliability, we survey CR members every other year to learn about their experiences with the coffee maker brands they own. Our latest survey gathered feedback from 51,200 CR members on more than 67,000 coffee makers purchased between 2015 and 2023.

Based on these survey results, we used a statistical model to give each brand a predicted reliability rating—an estimate of your chances of experiencing problems by the end of the fourth year of ownership. We also give brands an owner satisfaction rating, which is based on the proportion of members who are extremely likely to recommend their coffee maker to friends and family.

Below, we break down the most and least reliable brands we’ve tested for drip coffee makers, single-serve pod models, and dual coffee machines (which brew drip coffee, as well as single servings of coffee using pods). Our survey results cover more than 25 brands, including major players like Breville, Cuisinart, Hamilton Beach, Keurig, Mr. Coffee, Nespresso, Technivorm, Zojirushi, and many more.

    Most Reliable Drip Coffee Makers

Drip machines, especially lower-priced models built mostly of plastic, can sometimes feel cheap and disposable. But according to their track records in the homes of our members, drip machines are quite reliable as a category. Just about every brand, with two exceptions, received a midrange to very favorable rating for predicted reliability.
