During foul weather, winter/snow tires can make the difference between getting to work safely or staying home. Traction is aided by their blocky tread patterns and rubber compound that remains pliable in below-freezing temperatures. But how do you know which winter/snow tire is better than another? The answer is simple: Combine Consumer Reports’ extensive test results with satisfaction insights from our members.

Consumer Reports conducts extensive winter/snow tire testing at our Auto Test Center and other northern, snow-bound facilities, and even does brake testing on the controlled surface of a local ice skating rink.

To supplement our instrumented test results, Consumer Reports surveyed more than 23,000 members who reported on tire purchases from 2019 to 2022.

More than half of members (55 percent) purchased new tires due to the normal wear of their old ones. The next most common reason to buy new tires was premature/irregular wear (17 percent). All other reasons garnered single-digit responses.

The survey collected winter/snow tire satisfaction ratings on 23 brands. As you can see in the chart below, the satisfaction was rather evenly distributed, with three brands earning the highest rating, three brands getting the lowest rating, and many clustered at average.

This underscores the value for shoppers to review our test findings before making a tire purchase because owners report having very different experiences.
