    Most Fuel-Efficient SUVs

These small and midsized models can save you money at the pump without sacrificing utility. Plus, there's a video highlighting the least-efficient models.

Fuel economy is a perennial concern for car buyers, with record fuel prices being a painful memory for many drivers. But Consumer Reports’ tests show that you don’t have to sacrifice fuel economy to get the space and all-weather traction you want. In fact, many SUVs now have fuel economy on a par with large cars.

Among the more than 50 tests we do are those for fuel economy. The measurements are derived from a precision flow meter and are rounded to the nearest mile per gallon.

    MORE ON SUVS

Overall mileage is calculated from equal portions of city and highway driving. SUVs are bought and tested with all-wheel drive. (Learn more about how Consumer Reports tests cars.)

There are hybrid SUVs leading several key ratings categories, and as you’ll see below, the most fuel-efficient SUVs overall are hybrids. Each SUV featured here returned 35 mpg overall or better in our tests.

Below, we spotlight the most fuel-efficient SUVs in order of their overall fuel-economy test results. Complete test results can be found by clicking through to the model pages. Most of these models have our Green Choice designation, which highlights the vehicles with the cleanest emissions.
