First Drive: Redesigned 2024 Hyundai Kona Has Grown Larger and Gained New Features

The small SUV is also available with a fully electric powertrain

Talking Cars on the Hyundai Kona EV

Update: Since this first drive review was originally published in September, 2023, we finished testing the Hyundai Kona. Read the complete Hyundai Kona and Kona Electric road tests.

The 2024 Hyundai Kona is a significant improvement over the previous-generation model. Sporting a radically styled exterior, it boasts a roomy interior and comfortable ride, although the pre-production models we drove had lackluster handling and cheap-feeling interiors.

    More On EVs

The Kona was initially available with two gasoline engines, a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder. An EV version with two different battery size options was added later. Read the complete Kona Electric road test.

When the 2024 Kona went on sale, we bought our own and put it through more than 50 evaluations at the CR Auto Test Center, including empirical tests of acceleration, braking, handling, and usability. CR members have access to the full road-test results
