Porsche’s namesake founder was pioneering electric vehicles over a century ago. The company renewed its exploration of electrified powertrains in recent years with sporty hybrids and the all-electric Taycan. In 2024, Porsche launched its second pure EV with the Macan Electric. For 2026, it receives some minor infotainment, driver assistance, and towing upgrades.

Fans of the gas-powered Macan shouldn’t fret. Porsche still sells the conventional version rather than letting the Macan Electric serve as an immediate replacement. Porsche’s CEO, Oliver Blume, also recently announced that a new gas-powered compact SUV is under development, which certainly sounds like an internal-combustion Macan successor. Yes, this is confusing.

    More on EVs

The gas-powered Porsche Macan is one of the bestselling vehicles in Porsche’s lineup. So when the automaker wanted to demonstrate it was serious about electrification, it took this popular SUV and made an electric version. Porsche has since slowed down its foray into EVs in response to market demands and continues offering a diversified lineup with internal combustion and hybrid models. For those still interested in a high-performance EV, the Macan Electric serves as the company’s entry point. The Macan Electric is based on its parent company Volkswagen’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE) chassis, which also underpins the Audi Q6 E-Tron and A6 E-Tron. It uses an 800-volt architecture for rapid public DC fast charging.

Compared with the current internal combustion engine (ICE) Macan, the Macan Electric rides on a 3-inch longer wheelbase, and its overall length is likewise stretched about 3 inches. Despite this, the interior can still be a tight fit for taller folks, especially in the back seat.

There are four configurations: the Macan Electric ($78,000), Macan 4 Electric ($83,950), Macan 4S Electric ($88,000), and Macan Turbo Electric ($109,500). They have different power levels, and all have all-wheel drive via front and rear electric motors, except for the rear-drive, single-motor Macan Electric.

The Macan Electric has received a light refresh for 2026 with some additional infotainment and driver-assistance technology. But we’ll have to wait for it to adopt a built-in North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug that’s compatible with Tesla Superchargers. (The Volkswagen Group previously announced that its brands—Audi, Porsche, Scout Motors, and Volkswagen—would implement NACS on vehicles starting in the 2025 model year.) It does include clever technology that will improve charging performance between its 800-volt battery and lower-voltage public chargers like Tesla’s Supercharger.

The Macan Electric is built at a Porsche factory in Leipzig, Germany, alongside the gas Macan.

What it competes with: Acura ZDX, Audi Q6 E-Tron, BMW iX, Genesis Electrified GV70, Lexus RZ, Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV, Tesla Model Y
Powertrains: 355-hp, single electric motor or 402-hp, 509-hp, or 630-hp with dual electric motors; 100-kWh battery (95-kWh usable capacity); rear- or all-wheel drive
    Price: $78,000-$109,500
    Destination charge: $2,350
    On sale: Now
    Final assembly: Leipzig, Germany

    CR's Take

Given the long history of the Porsche name being associated with electric cars, from the Ferdinand Porsche-designed Egger-Lohner C.2 Phaeton in 1898 to the current Taycan, it’s exciting to see the company embrace the technology. But we do wonder if the Macan, and Porsche’s other forthcoming EVs, will lose some of the visceral sensations long associated with the company. The engaging Taycan gives us hope. Easing into this market may be smart for the company and appreciated by loyal customers.

Like other EVs, the Macan Electric will benefit from the floor-mounted battery pack, which keeps the center of gravity low—no doubt aiding handling, as we have seen with the Tesla Model Y and other EVs.

The Macan Electric sounds like a straightforward transformation, but in the process, the price continues to climb, moving the automaker’s entry-level SUV deep into luxury territory. And with that, customer expectations for performance and features will increase. We look forward to seeing how it delivers.

    Outside

The exterior casts a similar shadow to the original Macan, but the smooth sides make the body look like it has been in the sun too long. Mercedes-Benz has embraced this trend with its electric cars in a related pursuit of improved aerodynamics.

Porsche is combining the slippery shape with passive aerodynamic trickery and active adjustments, according to speed, to achieve a 0.25 coefficient of drag, a number far more associated with low, aerodynamic-focused cars than SUVs.

It included two charge ports (one on each side), just like the Taycan. We recently tested this setup on our Audi Q6 e-Tron, and while helpful for home charging, it can be confusing when using a DC fast charger because only one of the ports is compatible. We’re happy to see traditional exterior door handles, but less excited about the lack of a rear windshield wiper, an EV trend we can’t embrace.

    Inside

The cabin embraces the “screens galore” trend, with up to three displays spanning the entire dash. The center infotainment screen measures 10.9 inches, a bit modest these days. It’s based on the Android Automotive operating system and is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There’s a “Hey Porsche” virtual assistant, and yes, a Porsche representative confirmed that it will respond to both “Por-sha” and the single-syllable pronunciation.

There are as many as three screens, with an optional display for passengers.

The optional 10.9-inch screen to the right is to entertain the front passenger. (It’s perhaps a sad commentary on society that being in a Porsche isn’t entertainment enough anymore.) Options for either a compass or an analog clock (the latter comes as part of Porsche’s performance-enhancing Sport Chrono package) that sits atop the center of the dashboard is a heritage-evoking touch.

The available Porsche Driver Experience system creates a massive head-up display on the windshield, akin to an 87-inch screen in front of the driver, that works with augmented reality to overlay key driving information. This allows navigation directions, such as arrows, to be positioned over real streets. The Macan Electric also has an in-car charging planner, which can include charging stops in the car’s navigation guidance when planning a longer drive.

New multiplayer games allow Macan Electric passengers—and even the driver—to have a little more fun while the car is charging.

For 2026, Porsche added a new digital key and AI-based voice controls designed to interact with normal, conversational speech. The digital key allows you to use a compatible iPhone, Apple Watch, or Android mobile device in place of your physical key to lock, unlock, and start the car, and it’s shareable among multiple mobile devices.

The 2026 Macan Electric gained more support for in-car games that can be downloaded onto the SUV itself through its infotainment system and controlled through either the touchscreen, a smartphone, or a Bluetooth device. Multiplayer modes allow users of separate screens in the front and rear seats to play each other, and the driver can even play against the front and rear passengers when the vehicle is stopped.

The back seat is a tad tight, though climate controls and ambient lighting enhance the passenger experience.

Small-item cabin storage is at a premium, another Porsche characteristic. An eight-way adjustable driver’s seat is standard, with 14- and 18-way adjustable seats available. Heated front seats are also standard.

Even with the increased wheelbase and length, the back seat is a bit snug for adults, but optional heated rear seats may make their ride a little comfier.

There are now two luggage locations. The rear cargo space, with the back seat folded, is a little larger than in the current Macan. Plus, there’s a small luggage compartment under the hood, where an engine would traditionally be located.

The rear cargo space is a smidge larger than the Macan. The wide opening should make it easier to load large items, but the angled rear shape will dictate what can fit.

    What Drives It

The base Macan Electric is rear-drive only, with up to 355 horsepower. The other Macan Electric versions are fitted with front and rear motors, enabling all-wheel drive. The Turbo further benefits from a torque-vectoring system that can rapidly route power to any corner to enhance handling.

The Macan 4 has up to 402 horsepower, the Macan 4S achieves up to 509 horsepower, and the Macan Turbo peaks at 630 horsepower. More significantly, the Turbo produces the most torque at 833 lb.-ft. This surely translates to a great power surge when accelerating. The Macan receives no mechanical changes with its 2026 update, so we expect its EPA-estimated range to stay the same: 315 miles for the base Macan Electric, 308 miles for the Macan 4 Electric, and 288 miles for the Macan 4S Electric and Macan Turbo Electric.

The Macan Electric is the first model based on the company’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE) with an 800-volt architecture.

The motors draw from a 100-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery; 95 kilowatt-hours are usable. The 800-volt architecture enables DC fast charging speeds of up to 270 kW using a Combined Charging System (CCS) plug. Porsche says the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in about 21 minutes under ideal conditions. It uses a splitting device to effectively cut the 800-volt battery into two 400-volt packs. This is key because it will make the Macan Electric more compatible and charge more quickly when using lower-voltage networks such as Tesla’s Superchargers (which Macan Electrics can still use with a NACS-to-CCS adapter). AC charging at up to 11 kW is possible, depending on the external charging hardware used.

All versions are fitted with an active air suspension system that can electrically adjust the dampers in real time to balance comfort and performance as called upon via driver-selectable modes. Further heightening dynamics is the optional rear-axle steering, which can provide up to 5 degrees of turning. The rear wheels rotate in the opposite direction from the fronts to allow for a tighter turning circle, which is helpful when parking. They turn in the same direction as the front wheels at higher speeds to aid handling.

For 2026, the Macan Electric’s maximum towing capacity was increased to 5,500 pounds on its AWD models, a full 1,100 pounds over the previous model year.

    Active Safety and Driver Assistance

Standard equipment includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic warning, lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, and an exit warning, which watches for approaching traffic when occupants are getting out of the SUV.

For the 2026 update, the optional high-resolution, 360-degree surround view camera now includes a system that can find and guide the Macan Electric into parking spaces, including parallel spaces. Porsche also added other new parking assists, including a Trained Parking system that automatically recognizes frequently used parking spots (such as a home garage or an assigned parking space) and offers to guide the vehicle into them, as well as a Reversing Assist that automatically reverses up to 160 feet in the same path where the Macan Electric just drove forward. A new camera view allows drivers to see into the area directly in front of the vehicle that’s usually obscured by the vehicle’s hood.
