Talking Cars 480: Driving the Hyundai Ioniq 9
Plus, the panel discusses whether a hybrid is a better choice than a nonhybrid because of battery degradation, and whether charging a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) to full hurts battery life

Main theme: In this episode of the “Talking Cars” podcast, we discuss our impressions of the Hyundai Ioniq 9 three-row all-electric SUV.
The Ioniq 9 shares a platform with the Kia EV9, which we discussed back on episode #438. But while the EVs have the same seating capacities, nearly identical dimensions, and similar energy efficiency figures, it’s clear that Hyundai is staking out a slightly more premium positioning for the Ioniq 9. Its sleeker styling and richly appointed interior give the EV a feeling that’s more like the Genesis line of EVs.
Our panel discusses how the Ioniq compares in terms of power delivery, ride and handling, cabin access, and active safety and driver assistance systems. And they discuss one big question: With the redesign of the Hyundai Palisade (and likely the Kia Telluride), both of which will offer hybrid powertrains, is it worth it to go EV in this class?

Audience Questions:
• We keep our vehicles years after the warranty expires and drive less than 7,000 miles a year. I understand that hybrids like to be driven a lot, and technically, the battery’s degradation process begins on Day 1, whether the vehicle is being used or not. Is buying a hybrid still a better choice over a nonhybrid?
• I have a Subaru Solterra EV, and as I was looking at the new Toyota RAV4 PHEV launch announcement, it got me questioning the value of a PHEV. It sems like to get the value of the electric miles, you need to charge it almost every day. But by forcing everyday charging, aren’t you lowering battery life?
