Volvo Vehicles Recalled for Faulty Backup Cameras and Brakes

Plug-in hybrids and EVs that had faulty backup cameras fixed may need a second software update to prevent dangerous brake failure

Volvo is recalling more than 410,000 cars and SUVs because their backup cameras may stop working, which could lead to a crash. Polestar, which shares corporate ownership with Volvo, is also recalling more than 3,500 Polestar 3 SUVs for a similar camera issue (NHTSA number: 25V293000).

Among those vehicles, some plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and electric models that have had their software updated to fix this problem have been recalled again and may need a second software update to prevent their brakes from failing.

    The original recalled vehicles include:
    • 2021-2025 Volvo XC40 SUVs
    • 2022 Volvo V90 wagons
    • 2022-2025 Volvo S90 sedans and V90 Cross Country wagons
    • 2022-2025 Volvo C40 SUVs
    • 2022-2025 Volvo XC60 SUVs
    • 2023-2025 Volvo S60 sedans and V60 and V60 Cross Country wagons
    • 2023-2025 Volvo XC90 SUVs

    MORE ON car RECALLS

Owners of all-electric or PHEV vehicles running software version 3.5.14 will need an additional software update. Otherwise, they may lose their brakes while traveling downhill in "B" mode or with one-pedal driving active.

According to Volvo, both problems are caused by faulty software. Owners will either be able to download updated software themselves or have a dealership install it for free.

In the meantime, owners of the Volvo EV and PHEV cars and SUVs mentioned above should not use "B" Mode (for plug-in hybrid vehicles) or "One Pedal Drive" (for pure electric vehicles) until a fix is available.

Volvo Backup Camera and Brake Recall Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • Volvo vehicles with Google-built-in infotainment systems built between Sept. 7, 2020, and April 21, 2025, and software version 3.4.5 or older
    • Certain Volvo PHEV and EVs running software version 3.5.14

The problem: A software issue can prevent the backup camera from displaying an image, which means the recalled vehicles are not in compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 111, which includes rules for rear visibility. The software update that fixed this issue, version 3.5.14, may affect the brake control module, causing a temporary or total loss of braking.

The fix: A new software version will fix both problems.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners can contact Volvo at 800-458-1552 or Polestar at 800-806-2504.

NHTSA campaign number: For Volvo cars, the NHTSA campaign number to fix the backup camera is 25V282, and Volvo’s own number is R10320. The NHTSA number for the braking issue is 25V392, and Volvo’s number is R10329. For Polestar vehicles, the NHTSA campaign number to fix the backup camera is 25V293, and Polestar’s own number is RP1057.
