Tesla Recalls More Than 239,000 Cars to Fix Backup Cameras

Although a software update was enough for some vehicles, others will need to have a part replaced

Tesla is recalling some 2023-2025 Model X and Model Y SUVs and 2024-2025 Model 3 and Model S sedans because their backup cameras may not display an image while the car is in Reverse.

    MORE ON CAR RECALLS

Although Tesla says an over-the-air software update released in December 2024 fixed the problem on some vehicles, others will need to be taken to a Tesla service center to have their computer replaced. As with all recalls from all manufacturers, this repair will be free of charge for the consumer.

The problem is due to a specific combination of software and hardware that could cause a short-circuit in colder temperatures. Only vehicles with specific car computers that also used a software release prior to 2024.44.25.3 or 2024.45.25.6 are involved in this recall.

According to documentation provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration by Tesla, reports of failing backup cameras started to increase in late November 2024. The automaker has told NHTSA it is aware of 887 warranty claims and 68 customer complaints but no injuries or crashes related to the recall.

    Tesla Backup Camera Recall Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • Tesla Model 3 sedans manufactured between Jan. 15, 2024, and Dec. 12, 2024.
    • Tesla Model S sedans manufactured between April 24, 2024, and Nov. 27, 2024.
    • Tesla Model X SUVs manufactured between Jan. 25, 2023, and Dec. 2, 2024.
    • Tesla Model Y SUVs manufactured between May 23, 2023, and Dec. 16, 2024.

The problem: A software problem may cause a short-circuit that could prevent a backup camera from displaying an image. If this happens, the vehicle will not meet federal motor vehicle safety standards.

The fix: Software releases 2024.44.25.3, 2024.45.25.6, and later addressed the problem, according to Tesla. But the automaker says if a vehicle already experienced a short-circuit or “stress” that could lead to a short-circuit prior to the software update, it will need its car computer replaced.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call Tesla at 877-798-3752.

Tesla’s number for this recall is SB-25-00-001.
