Subaru Recalls Sedans and SUVs to Fix Backup Cameras and Reverse Lights

The Crosstrek, Forester, Legacy, and Outback are included in this recall

Subaru is recalling over 95,000 Crosstrek SUVs from the 2021 model year, Forester SUVs from the 2022 model year, and Legacy sedans and Outback SUVs from the 2021 through 2023 model years. The problem is a faulty switch that could prevent the backup camera and reverse warning lights from turning on when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse.

    MORE ON RECALLS

If this switch fails, drivers may also notice that the gear position indicator on the instrument panel is malfunctioning, or that the check engine light is illuminated. In some cases, the vehicle will not start.

To fix the problem, Subaru dealerships will replace the faulty switch, free of charge.

In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Subaru says it is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this issue.

    Subaru Recall Details

    Vehicles Recalled

    • Subaru Crosstrek SUVs manufactured between Feb. 8, 2021, and July 30, 2021

    • Subaru Forester SUVs manufactured between July 26, 2021, and July 27, 2021

    • Subaru Legacy sedans manufactured between March 18, 2021, and Aug. 25, 2021

    • Subaru Outback SUVs manufactured between March 17, 2021, and May 16, 2022

The problem: Due to a manufacturing error, a switch that signals whether the vehicle is in Reverse could fail due to water intrusion. If this happens, the backup camera and reverse lights could stop working, the gear position indicator could display incorrectly, and the vehicle may not start.

The fix: Subaru dealerships will replace the faulty switch, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Subaru at 800-782-2783.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V755. Subaru’s own number for this recall is WRQ-23.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
