Mazda CX-30 and Mazda3 Recalled to Fix Airbag Software Issue

In specific situations, a sensor may mistakenly deactivate the vehicle's airbags

Mazda is recalling 171,412 CX-30 SUVs and 3 sedans and hatchbacks because a unique sequence of events might deactivate their airbags, increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants in a crash.

    MORE ON car RECALLS

The problem can only occur if the vehicle’s starter battery dies after the ignition has been left in the “on” position without the engine running for 2 or more hours, according to documents the automaker provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),

If this happens, the vehicle’s airbag sensor may store an error code that deactivates the airbags even after the battery has been recharged or replaced. If the airbags are deactivated, an airbag warning light will illuminate on the gauge cluster behind the steering wheel, and the airbags will not protect occupants in a crash.

Mazda dealerships will reprogram and, if necessary, replace the airbag sensors in affected vehicles. As with all recall repairs, the fix is free of charge.

    Mazda Airbag Recall Details

Vehicles recalled: 2024–2025 CX-30 SUVs and Mazda3 sedans and hatchbacks

The problem: If one of the affected vehicles is left with the ignition in the “on” position without the engine running for 2 or more hours and the battery depletes, the airbag sensor, which Mazda calls a Sophisticated Airbag Sensor (SAS), may erroneously deactivate the vehicle’s airbags.

The fix: Mazda dealerships will update the SAS software and, if necessary, replace the SAS.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Mazda at 800-222-5500.

NHTSA campaign number: 25V357. Mazda’s own number for this recall is 7525E.
