Ford Mustang Recalled for Backup Camera and Traction Control Issues

Only models with a 5.0-liter engine and manual transmission are included in the recall

Ford is recalling over 25,000 Mustang coupes and convertibles from the 2019 and 2020 model years because their backup cameras, reverse lights, and active safety features may not work properly. The problems are due to a software issue.

In addition to an inoperable backup camera and reverse lights, drivers may also notice a warning light on the dashboard showing which functions are not available. These may include traction control, forward collision warning (FCW), blind spot warning (BSW) and cross traffic warning. The absence of these features increases the risk of a crash.

Ford says it is aware of nearly 200 warranty claims related to this recall, but no crashes or injuries.

    The Details

Vehicles recalled: Ford Mustang coupes and convertibles with manual transmissions and 5.0-liter engines built from Jan. 18, 2018, through Dec. 16, 2020.

The problem: Because of a software issue, the vehicle’s powertrain control module (PCM) may misinterpret some signals from the transmission gear position sensor as evidence of a fault, and erroneously shut down certain vehicle features. These features include the backup camera, reverse lights, traction control, forward collision warning (FCW), blind spot warning (BSW) and cross traffic warning.

The fix: Ford dealerships will update the vehicle software, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Ford will begin mailing recall notices to owners of affected vehicles on June 13, 2022. Owners may also contact Ford at 866-436-7332.

NHTSA campaign number: 22V382. Ford’s own number for this recall is 22S37.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
