Nissan Pathfinder Recalled Due to a Problem That Can Keep the Brake Lights On
A worn brake switch can cause issues with the lights and gear selector
Nissan is recalling more than 267,000 Pathfinder SUVs due to concerns that wear to the brake light switch relay can cause the brake lights to remain on, even when the brakes are not being used. The problem affects certain 2013-2015 Pathfinders. It can also cause the brake-shift interlock to not work properly, thereby allowing the driver to move the gear selector out of Park without depressing the brake pedal.
This action includes all Pathfinders subject to a previous, related recall, NHTSA number 16V-380—even those that had the repair work performed. This problem does not affect any other Nissan or Infiniti vehicles.
Owners will be notified in March 2021.
The Details
Vehicles recalled: 267,276 Nissan Pathfinders from the 2013, 2014, and 2015 model years.
The problem: The location of the brake light switch may cause the brake light switch relay to repeatedly open and close. Over time, this can cause the relay to stick in the On position, with the brake lights remaining illuminated even when the brakes are not applied. Additionally, this may interfere with the brake-shift interlock, allowing the driver to shift the vehicle out of the Park position, without depressing the brake pedal.
The fix: The dealership will either re-install the brake light switch or swap positions with the automatic speed control device (ASCD) switch; depending on the model year. In addition, the brake light relay will be replaced with a new one. All repairs will be performed free of charge.
