Consumer Reports’ tests reveal the best freestanding and undercounter wine fridges from New Air, Antarctic Star, Koolatron, and Kalamera

The best wine fridges—also called wine coolers or wine chillers—maintain steady temperatures (despite temperature fluctuations in the room) and run so quietly that you forget they’re there. They can also vary significantly in their performance and energy usage, just like full refrigerators.

That’s why, at Consumer Reports, we use sensors across all our wine fridge contenders to evaluate their ability to reach (and keep) a set temperature. We also pay close attention to each wine fridge’s energy consumption—believe it or not, they aren’t very efficient and they aren’t a part of the government’s Energy Star program.

“It is always surprising how much electricity these tiny little fridges can use, almost as much as a full-sized top-freezer refrigerator,” says Bernie Deitrick, CR’s test engineer for wine fridges. “The worst model only held eight bottles and costs about $31 per year to run.”

In addition to their varied performance, wine fridges can also vary drastically in price. Among the eight models we tested, prices range from less than $200 to over $500. Some high-end models cost more than full-sized refrigerators.

Another key element that affects price is whether you’re looking for a freestanding wine fridge or an undercounter wine fridge. As their names suggest, freestanding models can stand up on their own, while undercounter models need to be bolted down to your cabinetry. While the former tend to be much more affordable than the latter, a high price is not indicative of good performance.
