In Consumer Reports’ cooking appliance lab, our engineers and technicians put dozens of new gas ranges through their paces each year. Our performance tests capture everything from how quickly a model heats water to how evenly it bakes.

But we also look into how appliances hold up outside the lab, in the real world of our members’ homes. We survey members every year about the products they own, and we use that data to make projections about how new models from a given brand will hold up over time—our predicted reliability ratings.

We also ask members how likely they are to recommend their range, and that serves as the basis for our owner satisfaction rating.

    More on Ranges

These latest findings come from the Consumer Reports 2021, 2022, and 2023 Spring Surveys, which leverage data on 50,329 ranges that our members purchased between 2013 and 2023.

“The reliability between gas range brands varies,” says Martin Lachter, who oversees range surveys. In fact, only two gas range brands we’ve tested earn a top rating for reliability, according to survey respondents with gas stoves that weren’t described as pro-style. (You can find our survey results for pro-style stoves in our article on the most and least reliable pro-style range brands.)

To know what to look for in a quality range, start with our range buying guide. Next, turn to our range ratings, where you can filter for the features and options that matter most to you.

    Most Reliable Gas Range Brands

From our surveys, we have reliability ratings for 17 major manufacturers of gas ranges: Amana, Bosch, Café (formerly GE Café), Electrolux, Frigidaire, GE, Hisense, Hotpoint, JennAir, Kenmore, KitchenAid, LG, Maytag, Monogram, Samsung, Thermador, and Whirlpool.
