We Tried It: The $700 Balmuda The Brew Pour-Over Coffee Maker
The Brew is a beautiful device, but we had to know if it could give the iconic—and much cheaper—Chemex a run for its money
Pour-over coffee is a highly customizable coffee-making method. You control how much water you are pouring over coffee grounds, how quickly you pour that water, and the temperature of the water you are using. The problem is, you don’t always have the time to follow this process for your morning cup o’ Joe. Balmuda claims The Brew gives users a pour-over coffee experience with fewer steps. No need to heat water in a kettle, weigh out your coffee grounds, or manually pour water over the grounds. But does it make a cup of coffee worth $700?
How Does the Balmuda The Brew Coffee Maker Work?
Balmuda’s The Brew pours water over coffee grounds in short streams, pausing every couple of seconds in between streams, mimicking the water pouring of a manual pour-over coffee procedure. During these pauses, a second spout pours water directly into the carafe, adding water to the brewed coffee without ever touching the coffee grounds in the dripper. According to the manufacturer, it is because of this bypass spout, plus precise temperature control and accurate drip, that The Brew produces a coffee with “bold and clear taste.”
