    Pillows

The Weekender Gel Memory Foam pillow marries the cooling properties of a gel pad with polyurethane foam. It offers only average support for back sleepers, but it’s very good at supporting those who sleep on their side. Our testers find the resiliency and breathability of the pillow to be top-notch, as is its breathability.

Purple mattresses have made their mark on the sleep industry with their "GelFlex Grid" technology. You can get that same pressure-relieving and contouring comfort with Purple’s DreamLayer pillow. This adjustable fill pick is designed with a urethane foam pad, with gel, and it has two removable layers. While side sleepers may like this pillow more than back sleepers, smaller sleepers will want to try it without the extra layers first, our expert says. Larger sleepers should try adding one of the additional layers. This highly breathable pillow offers cooling properties and a washable cover. It doesn’t retain warmth, either.

You can get a set of the Sleep Number ComfortFit Ultimate for a buy one, get one deal right now. This pillow is made of a blend of memory foam pieces and down alternative fibers. Inside the pillow casing are three layers that can be added or removed to tailor the pillow’s comfort to your individual needs. It earns top support ratings for both side and back sleepers, and our testers find it to be very breathable. It’s not as resilient as other options on this list, though, and might not hold its shape over time.

Layla’s Labor Day sale is the same promotion they’ve been running since Memorial Day—a buy one, get one 50 percent off deal. The adjustable-fill pillow from Layla marries polyurethane foam with kapok—the featherlike fiber made from the seed pods of the kapok tree, popular for being a vegan alternative to down. Our tests find that the model lives up to the material’s reputation, offering top-notch breathability in a soft and rather resilient package. Despite not having cooling properties as its name suggests, the pillow does not retain warmth. And while it offers stellar support for side sleepers, back sleepers are also well served by this pick.

    Sheets

Coop is the brand that introduced the "original" adjustable pillow to the market, and it seems it has another top-rated bedding product on its hands. Coop Sleep Goods ComphySoftSpa sheets excelled in our shrinkage and fit tests, proving they’ll stay securely on your mattress even after multiple washes. These polyester linens won’t wrinkle much, and their pleasing strength test results mean they’ll stand the test of time.

According to our sensory test, the Lands’ End Premium Supima Cotton Sheet Set is one of the softest in our ratings. Though you will experience some wrinkling, it still performs better than most natural cotton sheets in our wrinkling assessment. With an excellent fit for mattresses 14 inches thick and under, little to no shrinkage, and a very strong weave, it is a solid pick.

    Cooling Blankets

    Guohaoi Cooling Blanket

    Guohaoi Cooling Blanket

The Guohaoi Cooling Blanket is only $2 more than it was on Prime Day. It offers strong cooling performance—second only to the Elegear Revolutionary Cooling Blanket we also tried—and features a similar smooth, swimsuit-like feel. It’s made with a nylon-polyester front and a cotton back, and includes a satin border, though the build quality and stitching are less refined than the Elegear. While it stays cool during use and doesn’t retain heat, issues like the loosely attached layers and less comfortable design make it a less compelling option, given its similar price.

    Sleep Number True Temp Blanket

This cooling blanket from Sleep Number is not one of the chilliest options among the cooling blankets we tried, though it will keep you cooler than a traditional blanket. But it has many other great qualities that may make it worth a look. It’s well-constructed, incredibly soft, and cool to the touch. Plus, the material is very thin, making it easy to fold and store.

    Heated Blankets

    Bedsure Electric Heated Flannel Blanket

    Bedsure Electric Heated Flannel Blanket

The Bedsure Electric Heated Flannel Blanket is thin but light. Though it’s cozy, it resembles an inexpensive fleece blanket you’d find at a grocery store. One side is striped flannel and the other is linty fleece. The flannel is not the best quality, but it does get hot. And it has the lightest wires of the blankets we evaluated. This is the price for a throw-sized blanket. Other sizes vary in price.

    Duvets

    Buffy Cloud Comforter

    Buffy Cloud Comforter

Buffy’s Cloud Comforter is the softest choice in our at-home assessment. Thanks to its smooth, silky feel and fluffiness, the duvet is comfortable enough to use without a duvet cover. Made of recycled materials, it’s uniformly stuffed in layers to prevent clumping and shedding. The shell material is 100 percent sateen-weave Tencel lyocell.

    Room Fans

Lasko 18” Oscillating Pedestal Fan (1827)

Lasko 18” Oscillating Pedestal Fan (1827)

If you’re looking for a lower-cost pedestal fan, this Lasko model might be worth a look. It’s at a small discount right now. Unlike the Dreo fan above, it only has three speed settings, one oscillating mode, and a less powerful range of wind speeds. The height is adjustable, and the head does pivot, so it’s not totally limited but may be better suited for a smaller room.

Vornado Flippi V6 Personal Air Circulator

Vornado Flippi V6 Personal Air Circulator

If you’re looking for a small fan to keep things cool at your desk or on a bedside table, this little Vornado model could fit the bill. It’s quiet and fairly versatile, with a 180-degree tilt and two speed settings.

    Dreo Air Circulator PolyFan 311

    Dreo Air Circulator PolyFan 311

If you like white noise and a cool night’s sleep, the Dreo Air Circulator PolyFan 311 might be a great addition to your bedroom. It’s a sleek-looking fan that has the most features of all the room fans we evaluated, and its unique design makes it even more of a standout. It had the largest speed range, covering the lowest and highest speeds of the group. It also had the largest number of settings—eight in total—including four oscillating modes, among others. Its wind speed ranges from 2.1 to 6.4 meters per second, so you can feel good about its ability to cool down a larger space. Even better: It achieved this while placing second on our list of best energy-conserving fans.

    Mattress Toppers

Lab tests find that this topper from Casper doesn’t allow users to sink in as deeply as others. And I agree. This topper feels like an actual mattress, adding a touch of medium softness where needed without allowing the body to sink in too much. The two-layer cushion combines a layer of softer foam over a firmer base layer of foam. At a little under 16 pounds, it’s easy to move around, and its machine-washable zip-off cover made of polyester, cotton, rayon, and spandex makes it easy to clean. However, this topper can not be flipped. Casper offers a 30-night risk-free trial, and its toppers are backed by a 5-year limited mattress topper warranty.

This 3-inch queen-size memory foam mattress topper is still available for the same low price we saw on Prime Day. It offers excellent support and a deeper, more cushioned feel than many others. Infused with cooling gel, it helps regulate temperature for a more comfortable night’s sleep. The flippable design adds versatility, though it lacks a cover and corner straps, which may lead to shifting. Temperature-sensitive foam means the topper feels softer when warm and firmer in cooler conditions. Weighing 15 pounds, it provides average warmth retention and a balanced blend of comfort and support.

Viscosoft’s gel-infused memory foam topper is reasonably plush but still has a medium to medium-firm feel, based on my experience lying on it. Like the Dormeo, it earns first-rate marks for support and convenience. But this topper envelops the body more than the Dormeo, scoring on the warmer side for heat retention. Our lab data suggests that those who sleep hot are likely to feel that difference. Additional features include corner straps to help keep it in place and a removable machine-washable rayon cover. The topper can also be flipped and rotated, though it weighs 27 pounds (among the heaviest on this list), so you might need a helper. Viscosoft offers a full refund up to 90 days after purchase if you’re not satisfied with your topper. It’s also backed by a five-year warranty from the date of original purchase.

    Air Purifiers

The Levoit PlasmaPro 600S is a solid performer all-around, clearing the air of dust, pollen, and smoke at both higher and lower settings with great results. It’s noisy while running at a high speed, but it’s relatively quiet at low speeds, making it ideal for an office or bedroom. And you don’t have to worry about keeping track of filter changes: An indicator light alerts you when it’s time. This machine also has a dust sensor and a programmable timer.

If you don’t mind some noise, this portable air purifier from GermGuardian may be a solid option. CR testers found that it’s really good at removing dust, pollen, and smoke particles from the air when running at high speed. But the unit is pricey to maintain because the replacement filters are relatively expensive. The model features a convenient carrying handle, easy-to-use controls, and a programmable timer.

    Humidifiers

You can’t really go wrong with the HoMedics UHE-CMTF45-GY Total Comfort UV-C, which is designed to humidify small rooms of up to 278 square feet. It’s quiet, energy-efficient, and has top-tier moisture output. It comes with a nightlight feature and has an indicator that shows when you need to clean the humidifier.

    Mattresses

If you’re looking for a soft mattress, the Casper Dream is a solid pick, providing pressure relief and comfort. In our lab evaluation, we found the model—a newbie to CR’s ratings—to be a standout for petite back sleepers, and it serves all other sizes and positions very well. The Dream scores well for durability, too, so you can expect to get sound sleep on it for 8 to 10 years. If you sleep with a partner, you should feel very little vibration from their movement. CR members give Casper mattresses high marks for comfort and owner satisfaction.

The Avocado Green is often 10 percent off outside of major holidays, but we do typically see this discount improve to 15 percent closer to holiday weekends. And the Labor Day mattress sale has already begun, bringing the price of a queen Green mattress down to $1,784 from $2,099—it’s typically listed at $1,899, so you’re really saving a little more than $100. (And if you’re a CR Digital or All Access member, log on and read below about an exclusive offer to save a little extra.) The mattress performs superbly in our support tests for all sizes and sleep positions, except for petite side sleepers, where it still rates better than most. It receives only a middling score for stabilization, however, so if you don’t like much bounce or motion transfer, this mattress might not be the one for you.

CR members can save an extra $50 on any purchase of $500 or more. To get the discount, click on the Get Offer button above. Once you meet the minimum threshold, the discount will apply to your cart.

This memory foam mattress from Sleepy’s is a CR Recommended model. This mattress gets high marks for average and petite back sleepers, and above-average scores for all other sleeping types and body sizes. So if you prefer all memory foam and need a new bed, this could be a good option. Just note that it gets middling scores for stabilization and owner satisfaction.

    Air Mattresses

You don’t have to pay triple digits for a great air mattress, and the 17-inch-high Simmons Beautyrest Hi Loft Raised proves that. It’s nearly half the cost of the most expensive air mattress in our ratings, and it performs better than the pricier models. During the initial inflation in our convenience tests, our testers found it took about 3 minutes to reach full firmness; it then took 4 minutes to let all that air out. It earns an Excellent rating on our deflection test, meaning this is an easier mattress to get up off after you sit down. This model comes with a detachable electric pump and storage bag, and it folds down to 6x12x17 inches.
