The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2019 Nissan Leaf owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Backup or other camera/sensors

"The backup camera would periodically stop functioning and display a blank, pink, or distorted image. It would work fine if I open and close the trunk lid again, and so seems to indicate a loose wiring of some sort. Nissan has recently in early 2024 sent a recall notice for this issue but has not provided a fix yet as of May 2024."

Anonymous, OH (2019 Nissan Leaf Plus Electric)

"camera image was often completely black. This started a few weeks after I bought the car, used, from the Nissan dealership. I took it to the dealer and they said it required a software fix, but they had a devil of a time achieving that. Took several trips to the dealership over several weeks, but they eventually succeeded. Fortunately, it was covered by the 90-day used-car warranty, since they acknowledged the need for repair within the 90-day window, even if it took them longer than that to fix it. I bought the car in April of 2023 and the problem was resolved sometime that summer, as I recall."

Anonymous, MA (2019 Nissan Leaf Electric)
    Display screen goes blank

"This has only happened 2-3 times in 9 mos. Not a substantial issue."

Anonymous A., IN (2019 Nissan Leaf Plus Electric)

"The computer reboots unexpectedly, usually within 5 min of starting the car, several times per week. The dealership kept the car for 2 weeks "ordering parts" but the issue was not resolved. The issue is more of an inconvenience than anything so I gave up on having it fixed."

Anonymous A., CO (2019 Nissan Leaf Plus Electric)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The volume knob doesn't work for bluetooth devices; when turned, it sets the volume to zero, without exception. However the volume buttons on the steering wheel still work, so I use them instead."

Anonymous A., CO (2019 Nissan Leaf Plus Electric)
    In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The GPS system would sometimes display the incorrect location of my vehicle on the map, showing me in a nearby field or on another road than the one I'm traveling on. It would sometimes correct itself after a while or correct itself after I restart the car."

Anonymous, OH (2019 Nissan Leaf Plus Electric)
    Other in-car electronics problem

"When you try to turn the volume up or down the volume may jump several numbers up or down, but almost always goes down to zero. Usually it works ok for on and off, so I just use the steering wheel controls for volume. Also, if you turn off the volume when using CarPlay and then unplug your phone while the car is still on, usually the radio will start playing at about volume even though the sound was turned off. So then you have to turn off the sound again. I asked my dealer and they said its a known issue with no real solution yet."

Anonymous A., IN (2019 Nissan Leaf Plus Electric)

"The volume control knob stopped working properly. When I turned the actual knob to adjust volume up or down, it would randomly go on full blast volume or cut out completely. I could only operate the volume on the entertainment system via the buttons on the steering wheel, which worked fine. The dealer told me that was a common issue, caused by dust particles that get inside the rotary knob assembly and cause random output signals. The dealer showed me a hack to ameliorate this issue: By rapidly turning the knob continously in one direction for about 30 seconds, then repeating the process going the other direction, one can restore functionality (at least temporarily). I did not choose to replace the infotainment system (that's the only real fix) because it was just out of warranty and I did not want to spend several thousand dollars to get a new unit on a car whose trade-in value is about $7000 as of now (May '24)"

    EV Battery

Electric/hybrid battery pack failure, replacement or malfunction, or cooling.

    What Owners Say

    Electric/hybrid battery pack replacement

"As I was driving the car a warning appeared on the dashboard. It stated the EV system needed to be serviced and I would not be able to restart the car after I turned it off. I had the car towed to the dealer, they checked it, said the 12V battery was okay, and that I could take it. As I drove away from the dealer the warning message came on again, so I drove it back to the dealer. This time after extensively testing the car for several weeks, they diagnosed that the entire electric battery pack needed replacement. At first no new battery packs were available and the dealer provided us with a loaner car to drive while they waited for one to be delivered. After several more weeks the new battery arrived and was installed. All of the repair costs were covered by the warranty. Altogether we were without our car for seven weeks. It has been running well with no problems since the repair."

Anonymous, VA (2019 Nissan Leaf Plus Electric)

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

    What Owners Say

    Premature brake wear

"Resolved with neww rotors and pads at 32K miles. Use regenerative braking so was surprized at this early replacement."

Anonymous, NY (2019 Nissan Leaf SV Electric)
