    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt.

    What Owners Say

    Cylinder head

"THis model has the same issues as the models in prior years. Prior years models had a recall. The 2016 model did not have a recall even though it was manufactured the same way as the vehicles that were recalled. Honda did not bother to fix the issue and clearly had not concern for their customer or their customer's safety "During manufacturing of the engine piston, it is possible that the heat treatment process was not properly applied, resulting in the piston having an insufficient hardness level, making it more susceptible to premature wear. Consequence: A worn piston may suddenly fail, causing the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash."

Anonymous, MN (2016 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"it happen to earlier models, covered up , told this would never happen to me, and 8000$ later, going some were else to buy"

    Anonymous A., OH (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Caused a lot of engine knocking, very expensive repair."

    Anonymous, OH (2016 Honda Odyssey 3.5-L V6)

"MCU shutting pistons off for eco boost, broken piston rings."

    Anonymous A., OH (2016 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)
    Engine rebuild or replacement

"GOT a used instead of rebuilt. was lied to. good by honda."

    Anonymous A., OH (2016 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)

"We had the engine rebuilt in June 2023 to address a problem with the variable cylinder management system that eventually caused oil to leak inside the engine to foul the sparkplugs. The problem started very suddenly with the engine misfiring and many warning lights flashing on the dashboard. Although we could drive the vehicle, it was running very rough and not suitable for continuous use. It was an expensive repair and the vehicle was out of service for over a week. Our vehicle had just over 40000 miles on it at the time, and the dealer had never seen it happen with that low mileage, but it was common in that engine. Apparently, there was a recall to address the issue, but it did not cover the 2016 year model, so we had to pay for it completely. Less than a year later, in April 2024, the issue has repeated and one of the cylinders that was repaired is now leaking oil again, making the vehicle inoperable. The vehicle is currently at the dealer to be repaired and it will take at least a week to fully diagnose the issue. This type of engine performance is unacceptable for a Honda product and our plan is to purchase another minivan from a different manufacturer. In addition, we will likely never buy another Honda product and we will inform everyone we know about our negative experience with the brand."

    Anonymous, OH (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The VCM which turns off certain cylinders to save gas caused the piston rings in the engine to fail. Car just shut off one day while driving home. $5600 for an engine rebuild. Mind you EVERY schedule maintenance on this vehicle had been done. After researching found out this is a known problem with previous recalls in other years. My model year just wasnt part of the recall. Will never purchase a Honda again."

    Anonymous A., WA (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Had about 87000 miles on the Odyssey as we drove down the highway when the worst of the warning lights went off. Had it towed to a mechanic and we learned the issue was known in earlier models. They recommended we get it to a dealer, so we did. Dealer confirmed engine misfire, spark plug fouling, oil burning, and piston ring failure, plus engine mount worn nearly through, and on and on (we're still waiting for the day the catalytic converters fail given the other issues). What did the dealer recommend? A very expensive engine rebuild, all on us. Because Honda never owned the problem. They settled a previous class action lawsuit without admitting fault and it didn't cover newer vehicles. Look up VCM problems / failure for more information. I would love to know exactly how common this issue is and whether Consumer Reports has done any reporting (I haven't found any) or data tracking and analysis."

    Anonymous A., OH (2016 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Piston rings replaced due to misfires, the misfires continued. Honda eventually did a compression test and declared the engine to be failed, needing replacement."

    Anonymous, AL (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The problem started at about 160000 miles. The check engine light would randomly start flashing. After some investigation, it was determined to be the caused by something with the cylinders misfiring related to the system that shuts off 3 of the 6 cylinders when at cruising speeds. This is a known is used with Honda Odysseys but Honda refuses to acknowledge it."

    Anonymous, VA (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)
    Other major engine problem

"Honda has an issue with the piston rings wearing when driving in Eco mode. On the 2016 version of the Odyssey, there is no way to turn of Eco mode. Had to pay over $3K to have them repair the engine and replace piston rings with thicker ones. This is a known problem with their engines."

    Anonymous, SC (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)
    Timing belt or chain

"The timing belt needed replacement about every 1K miles"

Anonymous, (2016 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite 3.5-L V6)

    What Owners Say

    12V battery

"The battery died and I had to replace it. I was able to drive if someone gave me a jump, and I could start the car after shutting it off and leaving it for a few minutes, but if I let it sit for a few hours, the car wouldn't start."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)
    Body control module

"Remote rear door open fails intermittently. Mainly on high humidity."

Anonymous, NM (2016 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)
    Keyless entry

"My car would just turn on. Dash board would just light up and blink. Constant clicking of relays. Only way to stop it was to disconnect the battery. Took it to the dealer who said it was the VSA module (it controls stability control) wanted $1900. I took it home as that was clearly not the problem. Went online and found once again this was a known problem with the Keyless Entry Control Module. Watched a YouTube video on how to remove module and clean mold off it. Sure enough there was mold on the control board. Cleaned it with Alcohol put it back in. Fixed it. These people gaslight you at every turn."

    Anonymous A., WA (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The push button start will occasionally not recognize a key fob resulting in the vehicle not starting. If you grab the other fob it will start."

    Anonymous, MI (2016 Honda Odyssey 3.5-L V6)
    Other electrical system problem

"The sliding door intermittently will alarm that the door is not properly closed. Cycling door locks resolves the problem."

    Anonymous A., PA (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"There is a ghost in the van. Doors and infotainments suddenly stop working for no reason. The electronics on the consumer side (not the engine or anything like that) are just glitchy."

Anonymous, MN (2016 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5-L V6)
    Tire pressure monitor

"Alloy wheels and poor ability to measure pressure reliably"

    Anonymous A., NY (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The voice commands in my vehicle don't work."

Anonymous, KS (2016 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite 3.5-L V6)

"Sometimes my voice is recognized and sometimes it doesn't - somewhat frustrating."

    Anonymous, AB (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

    Transmission Minor

Gear selector and linkage, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission, leaks.

    What Owners Say

Other minor transmission & clutch problem

"Shortly after purchasing the vehicle two years ago, noticed the transmission did not run smoothly; problems shifting, slipping (higher revs than should be), transmission fluid was burnt. Had the fluid replaced at an independent shop, then had a dealer work on it. Changed fluid again (after only a few thousand miles) and they updated the transmission computer software. Its been about 11,000 miles and the same problems are occurring again (This time it did have about 1,500 miles of medium-duty towing, 1,000lbs, in mild weather). Will need to have it serviced again."

Anonymous A., CA (2016 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite 3.5-L V6)
    Rough shifting

"Started about 50000 Miles fixed by the dealer at no cost"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Occasional HARD shift from 1st to 2nd when starting out easy. Have to have transmission flushed frequently. Recommended each 30,000 miles by Honda. Intermittant "shudder" from trans converter during life of car. Honda can only flush 4.5 qts at a time as there is NO DRAIN PLUG on CONVERTER. Initial recall was for a "triple flush" (4/5 qts at a time 3 times, never totally flushing all fluid) and replacing special fluid to help combat this fault."

    Anonymous A., NJ (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)
    Slipping transmission

"The transmission started slipping at 55000 mileage on the car. It slipped upon accelerating at low speeds and when the automatic transmission switched between 1st and 2nd gear. It was a known problem with Hondas. There was a Technical Service Bulletin on this subject. I took the vehicle to the Honda dealership after doing my research. Unfortunately, I had to argue with the dealership that my car was covered by the TSB. While the dealership resisted, I ultimately convinced them to cover the repair at no cost to me. But I lost some faith in the dealership after this experience."

Anonymous, KS (2016 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite 3.5-L V6)
    Transmission computer

"Computer was reset when the rough shifting problem was corrected"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Had to pay for a "computer update" and still doesnt shift like its suppossed to."

    Anonymous, SC (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

    Brakes

Premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, brake failure, regenerative braking.

"Due to brake wear and mileage"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"Steering wheel (not the brake pedal) pulsates when brakes are applied after rotors become warped."

    Anonymous A., NY (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)
    Rotors

"Had rotors trued about 6 months ago, already need to be done again. Pads are good, driving is normal."

Anonymous A., CA (2016 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite 3.5-L V6)

"Rotors overheat and warp every 17,000 miles causing pulsation in steering wheel when braking. Rather than pads wearing out, rotors need frequent replacement which is a major expense. Same was true with the 2011 Honda Odyssey. Honda has never corrected the problem."

    Anonymous A., NY (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Vibration in the steering wheel when breaking. Eventually, all four rotors warped"

    Anonymous A., (2016 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)

    Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, heat shields, leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Other/unsure

"Tailgate very hard to open in cold weather"

    Anonymous, MD (2016 Honda Odyssey 3.5-L V6)

"Sometimes the door has trouble opening and closing, but will still open or close when you try it for the 2nd time. It has not been enough of an issue to warrant a trip to have it fixed. Just a small nuisance. Happens once or twice a week."

    Anonymous, IA (2016 Honda Odyssey 3.5-L V6)

"the passenger-side sliding door broke and needing a motor replacement"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)

    Anonymous, MI (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

    Engine Electrical

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery replacement, hybrid battery related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, spark plugs and wires failure, auto stop/start.

    What Owners Say

    Coil

"Engine had misfires and 4 or 5 times required tow and a few times we could eventually drive slowly to mechanic. One particular cylinder kept mis-fireing but changed all plugs & coils over and over but never fixed it for good. Still concerned"

    Anonymous, GA (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The coil failed and caused misfire and check engine light to flash. The coil was replaced by a mechanic with a generic part and happened again in 7 days. A better, name brand coil was used and it failed again in 3 weeks. The mechanic finally used OEM coil and it has been fixed."

    Anonymous, IN (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)
    Spark plugs or wires failure

"Due to Honda's VCM feature, the spark plugs are likely to get fouled. I've had to replace at least spark plug twice in 1 year."

    Anonymous, MI (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The Variable Cylender Management system caused oil burning, mis fire codes, plug fouling and eventually car going into Limp Mode"

    Anonymous A., DE (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

    Body Hardware

Windows, locks and latches, doors or sliding doors, tailgate, trunk or hatch, mirrors, seat controls (power or manual), seat belts, sunroof, convertible top, glass defect.

    What Owners Say

    Door handle

"Sliding door drivers side broke, passenger side 6 months later. Neither were roughly handled. No pun intendwd"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)
    Doors or sliding doors

"Electric sliding doors not opening and closing properly. Making loud popping noises."

Anonymous A., TX (2016 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite 3.5-L V6)
    Mirrors

"Right insert side mirror was broken. Dealers wanted to change the entire unit. Unaffiliated shop changed the insert mirror for $75."

    Anonymous, MD (2016 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

    Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, fuel leaks, oil leaks.

    What Owners Say

    Engine mounts

"When our misfire + spark plug fouling + piston ring failure occurred, the mechanic also said the engine mounts were wearing thin and that they almost looked like they'd been chewed on by an animal. This was a part of how we came to understand the engine was failing due to Honda's poor design and negligence regarding their Variable Cylinder Management system. Excessive vibrations caused when the shoddy VCM system kicks in increases the wear and tear on the engine mounts."

    Anonymous A., OH (2016 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Two engine mounts were broken and transmitting excessive vibrations at certain engine speeds."

Anonymous A., CA (2016 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite 3.5-L V6)
    Other minor engine problem

"this van has a timing belt that needs replacement at roughly 100,000 miles or 160,000kms. The kit comes from Honda and it's a big and expensive job including water pump and timing belt and other belts. It's annoying they designed an engine like this that could blow up if the timing belt fails."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5-L V6)

    Suspension/Steering

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

    Anonymous A., MB (2016 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)
    Tie rods

"It was a relatively easy fix. took 1 day in the shop. and cost about $375"

Anonymous, KY (2016 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)

    Climate System

AC compressor, blower (fan) motor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate system, electrical failure, refrigerant leakage.

    What Owners Say

    Refrigerant leaks

"Has been in the shop several times for refrigerant leak repair. More than one shop."

Anonymous, IN (2016 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"The AC was not cooling, eventually it only blowed warm air. My mechanic suggested to fill it up with coolant and hope for the best. That was 9 months ago and ac is working perfectly. Cheaper to refill annually than to diagnose / fix problem."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

    Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, four-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive components, driveline vibration, electrical failure, traction control, electronic stability control.

An unlocked second row left outboard seatback increases the risk of injury to the seat occupant during a crash.
    Summary:
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2014-2016 Honda Odyssey vehicles. The second row outboard seats have a lever to fold the seatback and slide the seat forward to access the third row seats. Due to a manufacturing error, if the walk-in release lever is used to fold a fully reclined left outboard seatback forward, the seatback may stay in the unlocked position (free-folding) or unexpectedly unlock without engaging the walk-in or recliner lever.
    What should you do:
Honda will notify owners, and dealers will confirm proper operation of the second row left outboard seatback, and install a support bracket to the seat recliner. If the seatback cannot lock, dealers will replace the seatback frame assembly. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began May 7, 2018.
