Ford is recalling over 272,000 Bronco Sport SUVs from the 2021 through 2023 model years and Maverick pickup trucks from the 2022 through 2023 model years. These vehicles have defective batteries that could suddenly fail while the SUV or pickup is in use. As a result, they may stall at low speeds or they may fail to restart when the engine’s stop/start function is in use. The vehicles’ hazard lights may not operate, either.

    MORE ON Car RECALLS

Some of these vehicles were already recalled for a similar issue in April 2024 and will need a second recall repair.

The problem is due to a manufacturing defect in 12-volt starter batteries used in these vehicles. To fix the problem, Ford dealerships will replace them with new absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries, free of charge. Owners who already paid for new batteries out of pocket will be eligible for reimbursement from the automaker.

There have been no crashes, injuries, or fires related to this issue, according to documents Ford provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The automaker opened its own investigation into the problem after a series of consumer complaints to NHTSA.

The problem: A faulty battery may suddenly degrade while in use, causing the vehicle to stall. The faulty batteries were made by Camel, a major automotive battery supplier.

The fix: Ford dealerships will replace the faulty batteries with new AGM models, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Ford 866-436-7332.
